Biz, imza sahipleri, doğanın ve ekosferin tamamında kendinde (içsel) değer gören eko-merkezci dünya görüşünü benimsiyor ve savunuyoruz.

Eko-merkezcilik dünyaya, insanları ve insan türünü tüm diğer organizmalardan daha değerli gören insan-merkezciliğe (anthropocentrism) göre, çok daha geniş bir açıdan bakar. Eko-merkezcilik dünya görüşlerinin en geniş kapsamlısıdır ama ilişkili başka dünya görüşleri de vardır. Bununla birlikte, eko-merkezcilik bütün olarak çevresel sistemleri ve onların cansız boyutlarını kapsar ve böylece (tüm canlılarda içsel değer gören etik anlamında) biyo-merkezciliğin ötesine geçer. Ayrıca flora ve diğer organizmalarla onların ekolojik bağlamlarını da açık bir şekilde içerdiği için (hayvanlarda değer gören) hayvan merkezciliğin de ötesine geçer. Yaşamın devamının jeoloji ve jeomorfolojiye bağlı ve 'jeolojik çeşitliliğin' de kendinde değerli olduğu düşünüldüğünde, daha kapsamlı bir terim olan 'eko-merkezcilik' daha kucaklayıcı, dolayısıyla en uygun kavram ve değerdir.

Ekosfer, içerdiği yaşam dâhil, içsel olarak iyidir ve bu durum, ona değer verenin insan olup olmamasından bağımsızdır. İnsan (bildiğimiz kadarıyla), ahlaki değerler üzerine düşünen ve onları uygulamaya koyan tek canlı türüdür. Bununla birlikte, ekosfer unsurlarının mükemmel bir karmaşıklık meydana getirmek üzere birlikte evrimleştiklerini anlayabilir ve doğanın kendisi için bir değere sahip olduğunu ileri sürebiliriz. Eko-merkezcilik, insanların ekosfere karşı birtakım sorumluluklara, ifadelerini artan biçimde haklar dilinde bulan ahlaki duyarlılıklara sahip olduklarını kabul eder. Söz konusu 'doğanın hakları' bugün bazı ulusal anayasalarda dokunulmaz kılınmış olup Yeryüzü hukuk bilimi, doğanın hakları, yeryüzü hukuku ve vahşi hukuk şeklinde farklı biçimlerde adlandırılmaktadır.

Eko-merkezcilik birçok nedenle önemlidir:

Etik açıdan: Eko-merkezcilik, ahlaki toplumu kendi türümüzün ötesine, tüm yaşama ve hatta karasal ve sucul ekosistemlere doğru genişletir. Ahlaki kaygıyı canlı ve cansız bileşenleriyle ekosferin bütününe genişletmenin ardında güçlü bir felsefi ve bilimsel gerekçe bulunmaktadır.

Evrimsel açıdan: Eko-merkezcilik, Homo sapiens'in, ekosferin hayal etmenin bile zor olduğu yaklaşık 3,5 milyar yıllık bir mirasa sahip zengin yaşam ağından evrimleştiği olgusunu yansıtır. Diğer türler kelimenin tam anlamıyla (yakın ve uzak) kuzen ve akrabalarımızdır; pek çok kişiye göre bu biyolojik bağ nedeniyle tüm türlere karşı ahlaki sorumluluğumuz vardır.

Manevi açıdan: Tarihsel ve toplumsal-bilimsel analizler, çoğu insanın (ve bazı toplumların) eko-merkezci bir dünya görüşü geliştirmiş olduğunu kanıtlamaktadır. Eko-merkezci değerlerin, doğa temelli, eko-merkezci manevi dünya görüşleri ile gittikçe artan bir şekilde kaynaşmakta olduğuna dair güçlü kanıtlar var. Söz konusu manevi dünya görüşleri ile birlikte, dünya görüşlerinde tamamen natüralist olan insanlar bile Yeryüzünün ve ekosistemlerin kutsallığından ve bu yüzden de saygı çerçevesinde korunup kollanmalarının değerinden bahsetmektedir.

Yönetim açısından: Yasal, ekonomik ve politik sistemleri kapsayan yönetim sistemleri, ekolojik ve toplumsal sistemlerin karşılıklı bağımlılığını kabul etmeli ve doğanın var olma, gelişme ve evrilme haklarını gözetecek şekilde değiştirilmelidir.

Ekolojik açıdan: Eko-merkezcilik, ekosferin ve yaşamın içerisindeki tüm unsurların birbirine bağımlılığını ve hem insan hem de insan-dışı organizmaların mutlak surette doğanın sağladığı ekosistem süreçlerine bağımlı olduğunu bize hatırlatmaktadır. İnsan-merkezli bir koruma etiği, biyolojik çeşitliliğin korunması için tek başına bütünüyle yetersizdir. Evrimsel bir anlayışı temel alan eko-merkezcilik, Aldo Leopold'un "evrim odisesi" olarak nitelemeyi önerdiği olguda bizim sonradan gelenler olduğumuzu hatırlatmaktadır. Ekoloji, dünyanın ekosistemleri hakkında her şeyi bilmediğimiz ve hiçbir zaman bilemeyeceğimiz anlayışı temelinde alçak gönüllülüğü öğretmektedir. Bu, biraz da doğal olarak ekosferi oluşturan bütün ekosistemlere karşı ön alıcı bir yaklaşıma yol açmaktadır. Bu çerçevede, ciddi veya tersine döndürülemez zarar tehdidinin bulunduğu bir ortamda, tam bilimsel kesinlikten yoksunluk, iyileştirici eylemin ertelenmesini meşrulaştırmak için kullanılmamalıdır.

Eko-merkezcilik bizi sürdürülebilir bir geleceğe nasıl yöneltir?

Eko-merkezci bir dünya görüşüne etik açıdan adil olduğuna inandığımız için sahip çıkmamızın yanı sıra bunun, insanlığın amansız bir biçimde 'doğanın tahakküm altına alınması'na yönelmesi karşısında uygulanabilir bir duruş olduğunu da ileri sürüyoruz. Toplumun doğayı aşırı tüketimi ve aşırı sömürüsü ekosferin küresel ölçekte hızlanan bozunmasına yol açmıştır. Eko-merkezcilik bizi, yaşamın diğer bileşenlerini akrabamız olarak görmeye teşvik etmektedir. Bu akrabalık ilişkisine tüm tarafların yararı için saygı duymalıyız. Eko-merkezci bir dünya görüşüne sahip olanlar, ne insan-kaynaklı kitlesel yok oluşlar ne de çevresel bozunmayla ortaya çıkan acılar karşısında sessiz kalabilir. Eko-merkezcilik, yaşamla empati kurmayı, toprağı dinlemeyi ve her şeyin üzerinde gezegeni koruyup iyileştirmek için eyleme geçmeyi teşvik etmektedir. Eko-merkezcilik bizi çevreleyen dünyaya dair merak duygumuzu tetikleyerek de sürdürülebilir bir geleceğin şekillenişine yardımcı olabilir. Bu, toplumumuzu destekleyen ekosferin sürdürülebilirliği için zorlu eylemlere girişmemiz gerektiğinde ihtiyacımız olan etiği yaratmamıza yardım edebilir. İster iklim değişikliği veya kitlesel yok oluş gibi küresel krizlerin çözümünü içersin isterse yerel girişimlere katkı sunsun, eko-merkezcilik sürdürülebilir çözüm arayışında insanlığa fayda sağlayabilir.

Sonuç

Herkes (nesnellik arayan akademisyenler bile) kendi dünya görüşünden, etiğinden ve değerlerinden etkilenir. Bugüne kadar, Batı düşüncesinin büyük bölümü insan-merkezli dünya görüşü üzerine temellenmiştir. Çevreyle ilgili bazı cephelerde kaydedilen müthiş ilerlemeye rağmen, insan-merkezli bir dünya görüşünün, ekosferik çeşitliliği korumakta yetersiz bir temel oluşturduğu giderek daha açık hale gelmiştir. Bu nedenle, eko-merkezli bir dünya görüşüne yönelen bir dönüşümün, kendi türümüz de dâhil olacak şekilde Yeryüzündeki yaşamı güzelleştirmek için gerekli bir yol olduğunu savunuyoruz.

Biz, imza sahipleri, üzerinde yaşadığımız gezegenin geleceğinin, doğanın kendinde değerinin tanınmasına ve bir dünya görüşü olarak eko-merkezcilik yönünde güçlü bir desteğe bağlı olduğundan eminiz. Mümkün olan her fırsatta bunu dile getirmek ve bu dünya görüşü doğrultusunda faaliyetlerde bulunmak, bu tür faaliyetlere destek vermek ve ilham olmak hepimizin görevidir.
