Nosotros, los firmantes, mantenemos y defendemos una cosmovisión ecocéntrica que encuentra un valor intrínseco (inherente) en toda la naturaleza y la ecosfera.

El ecocentrismo tiene una visión mucho más amplia del mundo que el antropocentrismo, que ve a los seres humanos individuales ya la especie humana como más valiosos que todos los demás organismos. El ecocentrismo es la más amplia de las cosmovisiones, pero hay cosmovisiones relacionadas. Sin embargo, el ecocentrismo va más allá del biocentrismo (la ética que ve un valor inherente en todos los seres vivos) al incluir los sistemas ambientales como conjuntos y sus aspectos abióticos. También va más allá del zoocentrismo (ver el valor en los animales) a causa de incluir explícitamente la flora y otros organismos, así como sus contextos ecológicos. Dado que la vida depende de la geología y la geomorfología para sostenerla, y que la "geodiversidad" también tiene un valor intrínseco, el término más amplio "ecocentrismo" es el concepto y valor más inclusivo y, por lo tanto, más apropiado.

Sostenemos que la ecosfera, incluyendo la vida que contiene, es un bien inherente, independientemente de si los humanos son los que la valoran. Es cierto que (hasta donde sabemos) los humanos son la única especie que reflexiona y aplica valores morales. Sin embargo, también podemos entender que los elementos de la ecosfera han co-evolucionado para formar una complejidad maravillosa – y afirman que la naturaleza tiene valor para sí misma. El ecocentrismo reconoce que los seres humanos tienen responsabilidad hacia la ecosfera, sentimientos morales que cada vez se expresan más en el lenguaje de los derechos. Estos "derechos de la naturaleza" están ahora consagrados en algunas constituciones nacionales, y se denominan de diversas maneras la jurisprudencia de la Tierra, los derechos de la naturaleza, el derecho de la tierra y el derecho salvaje.

El ecocentrismo es importante por múltiples razones:

En términos éticos: El ecocentrismo expande la comunidad moral más allá de nuestra propia especie, a toda la vida, y de hecho, a los ecosistemas terrestres y acuáticos. Existe una justificación filosófica y científica convincente para extender la preocupación moral a toda la ecosfera, tanto sus componentes bióticos como abióticos.

En términos evolutivos: El ecocentrismo refleja el hecho de que el Homo sapiens evolucionó fuera de la rica red de vida de la ecosfera, que tiene un legado que remonta a unos casi 3.500 millones de años inimaginables. Otras especies son literalmente nuestros primos y parientes (cercanos y lejanos) – un parentesco biológico que muchos han reconocido como confiriendo responsabilidades morales hacia todas las especies.

En términos espirituales: El análisis científico histórico y social demuestra que muchas personas (y algunas sociedades) han desarrollado una cosmovisión ecocéntrica. Existe una fuerte evidencia de que los valores ecocéntricos están cada vez más fusionados con las espiritualidades ecocéntricas basadas en la naturaleza. Con tales espiritualidades, incluso las personas que son completamente naturalistas en sus cosmovisiones a menudo hablan de la Tierra y sus ecosistemas como sagrados y, por tanto, dignos de reverente cuidado y defensa.

En términos de gobernabilidad: Los sistemas de gobierno – incluidos nuestros sistemas jurídicos, económicos y políticos – deben reconocer la interdependencia de los sistemas ecológicos y sociales y transformarse para respetar los derechos de la naturaleza de existir, prosperar y evolucionar.

En términos ecológicos: El ecocentrismo nos recuerda que la ecosfera y toda vida son interdependientes y que tanto los organismos humanos como los no humanos son absolutamente dependientes de los procesos ecosistémicos que la naturaleza proporciona. Una ética de conservación antropocéntrica por sí sola es totalmente inadecuada para conservar la biodiversidad. El ecocentrismo está arraigado en una comprensión evolutiva que nos recuerda que somos rezagados a lo que Aldo Leopold llamó evocativamente la "odisea de la evolución". La ecología enseña la humildad, ya que no sabemos todo sobre los ecosistemas del mundo, y nunca lo haremos. Esto conduce naturalmente a un enfoque precautorio hacia todos los sistemas que constituyen la ecosfera, de modo que cuando hay amenazas de daño serio o irreversible, la falta de certeza científica completa no debe ser utilizada como motivo para posponer la acción correctiva.

Cómo el ecocentrismo puede conducirnos a un futuro sostenible

Aunque mantenemos una cosmovisión ecocéntrica porque creemos que es éticamente justo, sostenemos que también es práctico porque contrarresta el impulso incesante de la humanidad hacia el "dominio sobre la naturaleza". El sobreconsumo de la sociedad y la sobreexplotación de la naturaleza ha llevado a la degradación global y acelerada de la ecosfera. El ecocentrismo nos anima a ver el resto de la vida como nuestro parentesco, algo que debemos respetar tanto por su propio bien como por el nuestro. Los que tienen una cosmovisión ecocéntrica no pueden tolerar silenciosamente extinciones antropogénicas masivas ni el sufrimiento que acompaña a la degradación ambiental. El ecocentrismo fomenta la empatía con la vida, escuchando la tierra y, sobre todo, tomando medidas para proteger y curar el planeta. El ecocentrismo también puede ayudar a conducir a un futuro sostenible al fomentar un sentido de maravilla sobre el mundo que nos rodea. Esto nos puede ayudar a encontrar la ética que necesitamos si queremos tomar las difíciles acciones necesarias para sostener la ecosfera que apoya a nuestra sociedad. Ya se trate de resolver crisis globales como el cambio climático o la extinción en masa, o contribuir a iniciativas locales, el ecocentrismo puede ayudar a la humanidad a buscar soluciones sostenibles.

Conclusión

Todos (incluso los académicos que buscan objetividad) están influenciados por su cosmovisión, ética y valores. Hoy, la mayoría del pensamiento occidental se ha arraigado en una cosmovisión antropocéntrica. A pesar de los grandes avances logrados en algunos frentes medioambientales, ha quedado cada vez más claro que una cosmovisión antropocéntrica proporciona una base insuficiente para preservar la diversidad ecosférica. Sostenemos que una transformación hacia una cosmovisión ecocéntrica es un camino necesario para el florecimiento de la vida en la Tierra, incluyendo la de nuestra propia especie.

Nosotros, los abajo firmantes, estamos convencidos de que el futuro de nuestro planeta vivo depende del reconocimiento del valor intrínseco de la naturaleza y de un fuerte apoyo al ecocentrismo como cosmovisión.
